History Society for Kids Privacy Policy
Canada's National History Society (History Society) adheres to the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (Canada) which came into effect January 1, 2004. We aim to protect your information as if it were our own.
The following privacy policy description is an abridged version as it pertains to visitors of our children-oriented websites, Kayakmag.ca, and any online features we design specifically for kids ("children’s websites"). We encourage you to read the full versions of our privacy policy for all History Society websites, as well as our policies on Copyright and Terms & Conditions.
The Information We Collect and How We Use It
On our children’s website we only make use of a child’s personal information (i.e., first name, email address) to respond to a question or request for information from a child, to enter a child in a contest, or to award prizes in a game or contest feature on our site. When we advertise the winners of a contest or game on our children’s websites, we only use their first name, age, town/city and province. We do not otherwise make use of personal information. If a parent would prefer that we do not use their child’s age, town/city or province when announcing a winner, we will honour their request.
We do not rent or sell children’s personal information - ever.
Parental Consent
The History Society does not require children to share personal information about themselves to enjoy the games and activities on our children’s websites. Some activities, such as Have Your Say!, Bubbleology, Jokes and the teacher GG nomination forms, require email addresses to send comments and suggestions. However, these email addresses are not stored.
If we need to collect personal information for other reasons, we will notify parents that it is being requested, explain why we need it and how we plan to use it. We will request parental consent before collecting any personally identifiable information.
Contests
If a child participates in a kids contest or online feature such as, but not limited to Bubbleology, we will retain his or her email address as long as the contest lasts and until a winner is chosen. The winner will be notified by email or another method, as described in the rules. After the contest all participants' email addresses will be deleted from our system. We will not use email addresses in any other way.
Links to Third Party Sites
When children click on links from our children’s websites to other sites, we may open the other sites in a new browser window. We make every effort to link to websites that are appropriate for children, however, we have no influence over the privacy policies of those external sites which may collect personal information. External site links are for your convenience and that of your child(ren) only. Neither the History Society nor Kayak magazine endorse or recommend the services of any particular company or service, nor are we responsible for any services or goods provided by such companies.
Disclosing Information to Outside Parties
The History Society may provide aggregate statistics about website visitation and traffic patterns, and relate site information to reputable third-party vendors, but these statistics will include no personally identifying information.
